Issuing an Incomplete for a Student's Final Grade

This guide demonstrates how to assign a grade of I/incomplete to a student in Canvas. 

  1. Review the following guides and ensure you've followed all the proper procedures.

  2. Navigate to your course in SPC's Canvas instance.
  3. Click on Grades in your course navigation.
  4. Click on Submit Final Grades to SPC
    Note: If you do not see this button, please make sure you are using Google Chrome. Then, clear cookies, cache and history, close browser, and try again. If this doesn't work, try a hard refresh. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + R (or Command+ Shift + R on a Mac) will trigger a "hard refresh" of a webpage.

  5. The Final Grades Menu will appear on the right side of the screen. Select the Submit Final Grades to MySPC button to enter the Final Grades Wizard (1). Select the Final Grades tutorials if you need assistance (2, 3).

  6. If you're submitting prior to Grades Week, a pop-up will appear asking you to confirm that you're ready to submit early, and you'll need to select OK to continue.

  7. Grading Scheme: Select the appropriate grading scheme for the course. The current grading scheme will be displayed at the top (1). If you need to select a different grading scheme, select the appropriate scheme here (2). Then, select the Check for Missing Assignments button on the bottom right (3).

  8. Check for Missing Assignments: Now, the Final Grades wizard will scan your gradebook for missing assignments. All missing/ungraded assignments will populate, grouped by assignment, on this screen. Select a student's name (hyperlinked) to be routed to grade that assignment, or check the "I intend for the below student grades to be left ungraded" box. Then, select the Evaluate Student Grades button on the bottom right to move to the next step.

  9. Evaluate Student Grades: An incomplete grade is essentially a grade override. Instead of overriding a grade of 79% to 80% to assign a student a B, you're overriding the student's current total grade to assign an imcomplete instead.
    1. Navigate to the Grade Override column
    2. Check the box next to the student whose grade you're overriding to assign an incomplete
    3. Input a grade of 0 for the student
    4. Verify the grade of I for incomplete.
    5. Add comments.
    6. Select the Select Students to be Submitted button at the bottom. 
      Select the student, type in zero, make sure that I shows up now, and type comments if you want to
