How to select a course grading scheme in Canvas

Introduction

A grading scheme defines the ranges of scores that correspond to letter grades. At St. Petesrburg College, we've created custom grading schemes and instructors are required to select them during course setup and confirm them in the Submit Final Grades to MySPC Wizard. This guide demonstates how to select a grading scheme in Canvas.

Note: You must do this at the beginning of each course as part of your course setup.

Select Grading Scheme in Canvas Settings

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas.
  2. Select Settings from the Course Navigation.
    in course navigation, select settings
  3. Scroll down to Grading Scheme and check the box next to Enable course grading Scheme.
check the box next to Enable Course Grading Scheme
  4. Select the caret to open the Grading Scheme Dropdown menu (1) and select the appropriate grading scheme for your course. You may see different grading schemes than the ones in the screenshot below, because they vary by course/department. For instance, a lower division business course could have different grading scheme options than a developmental math course.
Note: If at any point you're unsure of which grading scheme to pick, reach out to your dean/department.
select caret to open menu, then select appropriate grading scheme
  5. Select Update Course Details to save the new grading scheme.
    select update course details
