In Canvas, grades may sometimes not appear in the Gradebook even after you’ve entered them. This typically occurs in two common scenarios: quizzes with manually graded questions and discussions or assignments that are resubmitted after grading. Below are the steps for resolving both issues.
Fixing Missing Quiz Grades
Quiz grades may not appear in the Gradebook if one or more questions require manual review. This often happens with essay or short-answer questions where points must be assigned by the instructor.
Canvas automatically grades question types such as multiple choice or true/false. However, if a quiz includes questions that need manual grading, Canvas flags them and withholds the grade until you assign points.
Step by Step
- Open the quiz in SpeedGrader.
- Look for a message such as “The following question needs review” above any flagged questions.
- Review the student’s answer and manually enter the score.
- Click Update and then Submit to save the grade.
- Return to the Gradebook to confirm that the grade now appears.
Note: This process only applies to quizzes with manually graded questions. If all questions are auto-graded, the grade should appear in the Gradebook immediately.
Fixing Missing Discussion or Assignment Grades
Sometimes you may notice that a student’s grade is replaced by a placeholder icon in the Gradebook. This usually happens when students make additional replies to discussions after grading or resubmit work in response to your comments.
When a student replies again in a discussion or interacts with your feedback, Canvas may treat the submission as a resubmission. This temporarily removes the grade and replaces it with a placeholder icon.
Step by Step
- Open the submission in SpeedGrader.
Locate the student’s work. You may see a placeholder icon instead of the score.
- Select the option “Use this same grade for the resubmission.”
- Click Submit to apply the grade again.
When you return to the Gradebook, the placeholder icon will be replaced with the grade you assigned (such as a zero for late work or the score you previously entered).
Note: This issue often happens in discussions where students reply more than once or respond to instructor comments. Using the resubmission grading option ensures the grade displays correctly.
