How to Set an Assignment Up to use Copyleaks Plagiarism Detection in D2L

This guide will explain how to set up an assignment for Copyleaks Plagiarism Checking in D2L.

Please keep in mind that you can chose 2 different ways to use Copyleaks in your courses.

Method One: Recreate the Assignment using the Copyleaks Assignment Tool.

  1. If you used TurnItIn in D2L, and want to use Copyleaks in D2L, you will need to recreate each assignment to use Copyleaks. Begin by copying the instructions from the previous TurnItIn assignment. Be sure to note the due date, points possible, and number of attempts in the Assignment.

  2. Open the module where the Copyleaks-enabled assignment will be. Select Add existing activities, and select Copyleaks Assignment Tool from the dropdown menu. This is how you create a new Assignment and tell it to use Copyleaks.

  3. Then paste the instructions inside the new Assignment and set up the due date, points possible, number of attempts, etc.

  4. If one of your assignments gives students a list of questions to answer, you must upload an exclusion template to tell Copyleaks to exclude the assignment text from the plagiarism/AI review. If you do not do this, every student will be partially flagged for plagiarism because they will all have the same list of questions on the documents they submit to you.

    1. Inside the Copyleaks Assignment Settings, select the Scan Settings hyperlink.

    2. Navigate to Exclude template to upload a document you want excluded from the detection scan. Select Upload files to upload the document.

  5. Once students submit their assignment, the Copyleaks program will show the assignments like the picture below. You can grade inside it and view results of student plagiarism, by clicking View Analytics.

When viewing a report the results will appear like the picture below. You can view the matched text from wherever it came from and if you want to exclude results, you can click on the 3 ellipses to the right of the result.

Method Two: Upload all student submissions to the Copyleaks Teacher Scan Tool.

If you don't want to take the time to do that, or you don't want to do that for each assignment, you can choose to use the Copyleaks Teacher Scan Tool. This would normally be used for checking discussions and emails, but you can use it as a work around until we migrate to Canvas. And, so that you don't have to redo the set up all of your assignments.
