How to Give a Student Access to a Course that has ended in Canvas

Have you ever had a student who needed just a few more days in a course that has already ended? Whether it’s a dynamically dated course, a retake for an exam, or resolving a technical issue, Canvas handles this differently than D2L.

In D2L, you may have used a "student add-it" function to re-enroll a student, but in Canvas, the process involves assigning the student to an Incomplete section—without necessarily giving them an official incomplete grade.

How to give a student access to a course after its end date:

  1. Navigate to the "People" Tab
    Navigation menu with "People" highlighted.
  2. Locate the Student
    • Click the three ellipses (…) next to their name.

select the settings (three vertical dots)
  3. Select Edit Sections.

Menu options for user settings in an application.
  4. Choose the Incomplete section from the available options.

Section enrollments interface with user options.

    • Click Update to confirm.
  5. Locate the assignments, quizzes, and/or discussion posts that the student needs to finish and Assign To the Incomplete section
    1. Locate the assigment/quiz/discussion and select edit.
    2. Scroll down to the Assign Access area and select the +Assign To button.
    3. In the new Assign To box that opens, type or select Incomplete.
in the assign to field, select or type INCOMPLETE

    4. When you're done, the Assign To box should have Incomplete in the Assign To field. You do not need to include dates. This ensures that all students in the Incomplete section have access to the content.
Assign to interface with the original assign to on top, and Assign to incomplete on bottom

    5. Scroll to the bottom of the Edit Assignment/Quiz/Discussion screen and select Save.
select save to save assignment settings
  6. To remove a student from the Incomplete section, follow the same steps but click the x next to Incomplete.

Note: If your class uses third party publisher content (McGraw Hill, Pearson, etc.), you may need to arrange access/update due dates inside the publisher itself, rather than inside of Canvas.

What to do in the case of a student that has been dropped/is no longer in the class:

If a student has been dropped from the class in Canvas, faculty and deans will not be able to add the student back to the course or the incomplete section of the course. A dean from the department needs to reach out to the Academic Technology Support Team and request that the student be reinstated in the Canvas course and added to the incomplete section of the course.
