1. Understanding Item Banks in New Quizzes

What Are Item Banks?

Item Banks allow you to store and reuse quiz questions across multiple courses and assessments. Unlike Classic Quizzes, New Quizzes tie item banks to individual instructors (not courses), so sharing permissions must be set manually.

Key Features:

  • Private by Default: New item banks are only visible to you unless shared.
  • Shared Access: You can grant editing or viewing rights to other instructors.
  • Linked Questions: Edits to a banked question update all quizzes using it.

How to Create & Share an Item Bank

  1. Create a Bank:
    • Go to New Quizzes Item Banks.
    • Click + Bank, name it, and check "Share to this course" (critical step!).
  2. Share with Others:
    • Open the bank, click Share, and add collaborators (e.g., co-instructors).
  3. Use in Quizzes:
    • When building a quiz, select "Find Questions" to pull from your banks.
⚠ Warning: If you don't check "Share to this course," the bank won't appear for others—even if you're working in the same course shell!

2. Inserting Images (Without Breaking Them)

Common Pitfalls:

  • Drag-and-drop uploads may seem to work but often break in future course copies.
  • Images linked to the wrong course during migration won't display for students.

Best Practice: Use the Rich Content Editor

  1. While editing a question, click the image icon (or Insert Image).
  2. Upload the file or select from Course Files (not "User Files").
  3. Add alt text for accessibility.

❌ Avoid: Dragging files directly into the quiz—this creates unstable references.

Fixing Broken Images

If students can't see images:

  1. Re-upload via the Rich Content Editor.
  2. Confirm the image is stored in Course Files (not your personal files).

3. Adding Equations (Without Errors)

Issue:

Equations may appear as:

  • Broken links
  • Blank spaces
  • Pop-ups in new tabs

How to Insert Equations Correctly

  1. Use the equation editor (LaTeX or graphical tool) in New Quizzes.
  2. Avoid copying from external sources (formatting may not transfer).
  3. Test in Student View before publishing.

If Equations Break:

  • Recreate them directly in Canvas.
  • Report persistent issues to Canvas Support with screenshots.

4. Editing Quizzes After Students Submit

Problem:

  • If students have taken a quiz, editing questions may trigger:

"Some students have already submitted. You can apply edits to a copy."

Solutions:

  1. Reset Test Student Attempts before editing:
    • Go to Course Settings Sections Remove test student attempts.

  2. Duplicate the question if locked, then update the copy.

5. Preventing Future Issues

Checklist Before Publishing:

Test in Student View (or with a real test student account).

Verify all images/equations display correctly.

Confirm item banks are shared if collaborating.

Avoid drag-and-drop uploads (use Rich Content Editor).
