Creating a Quiz Copy Without Respondus LockDown Browser for One Student

This guide explains how to create a copy of a Canvas quiz without Respondus LockDown Browser or Monitor, specifically for students with accommodations, technical issues, or other valid exceptions. Rather than adjusting the original quiz for all students, you’ll duplicate it and assign the alternate version only to the student who needs it.

When to Use This Process

Use this method when:

  • A student has accommodations that prevent them from using Respondus LockDown Browser or Monitor.

  • The student is using a device that is incompatible with LockDown tools.

  • You need to offer a quiz alternative without affecting settings for other students.

  1. Duplicate the original quiz.
    1. Open your Canvas course and go to the Quizzes section.

    2. Locate the original quiz that uses LockDown Browser.

What to Expect in the Gradebook

After completing the steps above, you’ll see two quiz columns:

  • One for the original quiz (assigned to most students)

  • One for the copy (assigned to the specific student)

Only students assigned to each quiz will have scores in the relevant columns. All other cells will appear grayed out. This behavior is expected and does not impact overall grades, provided the student is excused from the quiz they did not take.

Tips

  • Use clear naming conventions when creating quiz copies to avoid confusion.

  • Double-check quiz availability settings to ensure the student has access when intended.

  • If using modules, add the new quiz to the same module if needed—but be sure to lock visibility to just the intended student by using module prerequisites or availability settings.
