Introduction
If a Canvas Studio video embedded in an item bank question isn't playing for students, you can replace it with a public embed link. This makes the video viewable by anyone with access to the question, without Canvas Studio permission issues.

Part 1: Create a Public Link in Canvas Studio
Part 2: Add the Embed Code to Your Item Bank Question
Part 1: Create a Public Link in Canvas Studio
- Open Canvas Studio from the Global Navigation, and go to your library (where your videos are).
- Find the video you want to use and click the three dots (⋮) next to it.
- Select Share Media.
- Click the Links tab.
- Click Create a Public Link.
- Go to the Embed Code, then highlight and copy the code.
Part 2: Add the Embed Code to Your Item Bank Question
- Go to your Item Bank, find the question you want to update, and click the pencil in the top right corner of the question to open up the editing screen.
- Go to the content part of the question and click anywhere inside.
- Once you click inside the content area, you'll see a drag button (an icon with 8 dots). Click it and drag it down to expand the window.
- Delete the existing Canvas Studio video from the question.
- Open the HTML Editor (the </> icon in the editor toolbar).
- Paste the embed code where you want the video to appear (1) and press the HTML Editor button to switch back to the rich content editor to confirm that the video now appears (2).
- Optional Step: If you want to add more than one video to a single question, click enter to create the next line in the text box. Or type <p> </p> to add a line in the HTML code. Then paste your next video embed code.
- Optional Step: If you want to add more than one video to a single question, click enter to create the next line in the text box. Or type <p> </p> to add a line in the HTML code. Then paste your next video embed code.
- Scroll down and save the question.
Good to Know
Public links can be viewed by anyone who has the link, not just students enrolled in your course. Avoid using this method for videos containing sensitive or private content. This is intended as a quick workaround.
A couple of spots in the transcript were a little vague, so I made reasonable guesses: "pull it down" as expanding the question to edit it, and "remove the Canvas Studio" as deleting the existing Studio embed. Worth a quick check against your screen before publishing.
