Create a Quiz using Multiple Item Banks

This guide demonstrates how to create a Canvas Quiz that pulls questions randomly from multiple item banks. You can use multiple item banks on any quiz, but we see this most often in midterm and final exams.

Step-by-Step

  1. Create a Canvas Quiz in your course.

  2. Navigate to the Quiz (from Modules or Quizzes) and locate the Build button at the bottom of the Quiz page. Then, click Build
    Buttons for content management options.

  3. Select Item Banks.
Build interface with "Item Banks" highlighted.

  4. In this screen, you can view all the item banks (1) currently shared with your course (2).

  5. Select one of the item banks you want to pull questions from for this quiz.

  6. Select + All / Random, then select the X in the top left corner to close the window.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Select + All / Random ONE TIME ONLY, and then immediately close the window. If you press +All / Random multiple times, you will add multiple sets of the same questions from the same item bank, and need to go back and delete them. If your Build screen looks like the screenshot below, pulling from the same item bank multiple times, delete all but one.

  7. In the Build screen, you'll see that, by default, the quiz will pull all questions from the Bank you selected at 1 point per question. The example below shows that all 56 questions will be pulled from the Breaking Equations bank at 1 point per question.

  8. Click the Bank.

  9. To make changes, select Randomly select questions (1). Then, you can change the number of questions pulled from the Bank (2) and/or the number of points per question (3). When you are finished making changes, select Done.

  10. The next screen shows how many questions will be pulled from the item bank and how many points each question will be worth. Confirm that the settings are correct before moving on.

  11. Select Item Banks again from the Build screen.

  12. By default, Canvas will open up the last item bank you worked with for this quiz. Select Item Banks (in the top right of the window next to the X) to return to the full list of Item Banks in order to choose another one.
