Communication is one of the keys to keeping your student engaged and informed about your course. Using the email tool within MyCourses is one of your most important communication tools. There are some techniques you can use within MyCourses to easily send effective emails.

Searching the Gradebook and Sending Emails:

The search feature within the grade book is very powerful. You can search for:

  • An individual student
  • score on a grade item including the Current Overall Grade
  • Students that are flagged.

Using the flag feature allows you to quickly identify students that may need to be watched because their grades are low. Once you have completed your search, you can then easily send an email from the grade book. This is a great feature to keep the student engaged and informed about their grades.

Using Video Note:

Video Note enables you to create video recordings from your webcam and insert them through HTML Editor's Insert Stuff option, and anywhere video attachments are supported. Adding video notes to your email can positively affect the students by increasing your Teaching Presence in your course. Teaching presence is defined as the design, facilitation, and direction of cognitive and social processes for the purpose of realizing personally meaningful and educationally worthwhile learning outcomes. (Description: Teaching Presence | CoI).  Using Video Notes can really help your students stay engaged and informed no matter what modality you teach.
