Canvas Bad Request Chrome: Solution

The following error appears when Canvas receives too much stored browser data (usually cookies) and cannot process the request. It is a browser-side issue and does not indicate a problem with Canvas itself or with your course content.

This issue is most common for faculty who stay logged into Canvas for long periods of time or who access multiple Canvas roles (instructor, admin, test accounts) from the same browser.


How to Fix the Issue

Clear Canvas Cookies

This resolves the issue in most cases and avoids clearing your entire browser history.

In Chrome

  1. Stay on the page with the Bad Request

  2. Right click your mouse.

  3. Select Inspect
    shows using clicking Inspect in the drop down menu after right clicking mouse

  4. Select the Application tab
    shows user clicking application in inspect panel

  5. Open Storage

    image shows using clicking Storage option in the application window inside the inspect panel.

  6. Select Cookies

  7. Select Clear site data
    image shows user clicking "Clear Site Data" option in the application tab on the inspect panel

  8. Refresh the page and log back into Canvas
