How to Fix Broken Panopto Video Links in Canvas

Introduction

This guide will demonstrate how to relink videos into your course so they are embedded into the course content correctly, and all enrolled students in the course are able to view them. We've seen a number of issues throughout the migration from D2L/MyCourses to Canvas. The videos are in Panopto, but now that we're in Canvas, they need to be reconnected, or re-linked. This process involves:

  1. Locating the videos in their new folders
  2. Enuring that the instructors teaching the courses have access to the folders
  3. Instructors going into the course, deleting the old videos, and embedding the new ones via the Panopto button on the Rich Content Editor.
  4. Using the View as Student button to test.

How to Fix Broken Panopto Video Links in Canvas

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas that has broken video links. You'll know the video links are broken because students will alert you, and you'll see an "Unavailable Quicklink" screenshot of D2L/MyCourses where the videos should be.

  2. Navigate to a Page, Assignment, Discussion, etc with a broken link, navigate to the top righthand corner and select the edit button. This will open the Rich Content Editor, where you can make changes to the content.

  3. Inside the Rich Content Editor, click inside the missing video (there will be a box for the video inside the RCE box, but instead of a video it will say "Unavailable Quicklink" or something similar). Delete the video with the broken link (press the delete button on your keyboard, or right click and select delete from the dropdown menu).
  4. Inside the Rich Content Editor, select the Panopto icon to open Panopto.
  5. From the Panopto menu, select the down arrow to view the folders (1), and then select Everything (2).

  6. Locate the correct video. There are a number of ways to do this. You may able to find the folder containing the video from the dropdown menu and select the video. If this doesn't work, then do the following:
    1. Select Everything from the Dropdown menu (1).
    2. Type the name of the video (full or partial) into the search field (2).
    3. Select the correct video from the search results (3).
    4. Select the Insert button to insert the video into the body of the Rich Content Editor (4).

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are not able to find the video using the instructions in step 6, please reach out to atst@spcollege.edu. It is likely an issue of you not having access to the folder containing the videos. Please reach out to us so we can locate the folder with the videos and give you access so you can relink.

Use the View as Student Button to Test Video Visibility

  1. While you're on the course content (Page, Assignment, etc) containing a video that you just relinked, select the View as Student button in the top right corner.
  2. Once the student view opens, check to be sure that the video is visible and that it works when you press play.
  3. Select Leave Student View to return to your normal view in Canvas.
