How to Create a Video Assignment in Canvas

This guide will help faculty create a Canvas assignment requiring students to use Panopto to create and submit a video. Students will use the Panopto integration in the Rich Content Editor (RCE) to record or upload their videos, embed them in the assignment, and then manually submit their work.

 


 

 

 

 


 




Accessing the Assignments Tool

  1. Log in to Canvas and navigate to your course.

  2. Scroll down on the navigation menu and click Panopto.

  3. insure to review the page for existing folders before creating a new one.

    NOTE: After Creating Multiple Folders in your classes Make sure to select the proper Folder from the Drop Down

    Select your course from the dropdown menu.




  4. Click the three vertical dot menu on the top right. Select Settings.




  5. Click Create Assignment Folder.




  6. This is the folder where students will submit videos for a specific assignment. Give the folder a descriptive name that includes an addition to course, section, and the assignment title

     example: SLS1101 123 Intro Discussion.




  7. Once Named a folder will populate.




  8. Click Assignments in the course navigation menu.

  9. Select +Assignment to create a new assignment.

Configuring Assignment Details

  • Name: Enter a clear and descriptive title for the assignment (e.g., "Panopto Video Presentation").

  • Instructions: In the RCE, provide detailed instructions for students, including:

    • How to use the Panopto tool within the RCE.

    • A reminder to manually click Submit Assignment after embedding their video.

To help students, include the following steps in the instructions:

  • Open the RCE in the assignment submission area.

  • Click the Panopto icon in the toolbar.

  • Record or upload their video.

  • Select Insert to embed the video in the RCE.

  1. Scroll to the Submission Type section.

  2. Choose Online.

  3. Check the box for Text Entry (this ensures students can use the RCE to embed their Panopto video).

  • Points: Assign a point value for the assignment.

  • Due Date: Set the due date and availability dates.

 

Click Save & Publish to finalize the assignment.




Project Completion: Closing the Folder


After the video assignment's due date has passed, you may choose to close it to keep things organized.


Step-by-Step

  1. Scroll down on the navigation menu and Select Panopto.

  2. Select your course from the dropdown menu.



  3. Click the folder for the assignment.

  4. Click the three vertical dot menu on the top right. Select Settings.

  5. Then Click Close under the assignment folder.

  6. After you close it, you can make new assignment folders.

    Important: Please remember to give each assignment folder a different name so you can keep them organized. 


 

This section guides instructors on sharing videos across multiple courses or with other instructors while ensuring students can access them without any issues.

  1. Select Panopto.

  2. Click the three vertical dot menu on the top right. Select Settings.

  3. Select Edit and Name the Folder.

    Example : Shared Videos for all Courses - Humanities

  4. Select Create Assignment Folder.

  6. Select Change in the "Who Can Access the Folder" option below.

  7. You have a variety of share options. 

    Important!
    • Restricted: Only people you have manually shared the video with will be able to view.
    • Your Organization (Unlisted): Will allow anyone with the link or course to view the video.
    • Your Organization: If you select this option, anyone logged into an SPC account can view the video.
    • Public: This option will allow anyone, including non-SPC accounts, to view the video.

  8. Select Your Organization (unlisted).

  9. Now close the window.

    You will be able to share these videos in all of your courses without issue.

For Faculty

  • Assignment Not Accepting Video Submissions: Double-check that Text Entry is selected as the submission type.

For Students

  • Panopto Tool Missing in RCE: Advise students to check their browser settings or switch to a supported browser like Google Chrome.

  • Video Not Embedding Correctly: Ensure students click Insert after uploading their video in Canvas.

  • Submission Error: Remind students to click Submit Assignment after embedding their video.
