Opening Up Discussion Topics for Late Submission

In general, there is no special access feature for discussion topics, but there is a way to allow students to post late to make up for missing the discussion.  This is through setting the discussion to be moderated, and changing the end date.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Click on Submissions on the Navbar
  2. Click on Discussions
  3. Click on the drop-down arrow dropdown example.pngnext to the name of the discussion topic
  4. Click on Edit Topic
  5. On the Properties Tab under Options, check the box next to A moderator must approve individual posts before they display in the topicoptions a moderator must approve individual posts before they display in the topic.png
  6. Under the Restrictions Tab Change the end date for either Visibility or Locking Options to open the discussion topic
  7. Click on Save and Close (You should now see the moderated icon under the title of the discussion topicmoderated icon.png)
  8. Inform Student: To access this discussion topic they will need to go to Submission Review and Discussions, not Course Content.  After the student posts their thread, you will see an icon with an exclamation point. icon with exclamation point.pngThis indicates that there is a new post that needs approval. To approve the post:
    • Click on the Name of the Discussion topic
    • Click on the drop-down arrow dropdown example.png next to the thread name (You will also see it indicated by a red border)

MAKE SURE TO CHANGE THE TOPICS BACK TO UNMODERATED once the student has completed their work. If you do not, the discussion will stay moderated when you copy content to the next term.
