Deleting Grade Items

Deleting a grade item can be frustrating if you do not understand grade item associations. If you want to delete a grade item, you will need to disassociate (unlink) it from the learning activity it is connected to first, or you will not be able to delete that grade item.

The manage grade area the column named "Association" indicates which grade items are connected to a dropbox, quiz, external learning tool, or discussion topic. If you see an association linked in that column, the grade item is associated and cannot be deleted.  


Step-by-Step: Manually Delete a grade item

Follow these steps if there is nothing in the Association column.

  1. Click on Grades on the Navbar
  2. Click on More Actions
  3. Click on Delete from the dropdown more actions menu
  4. Check the box/es next to each item that you would like to delete
  5. Click on Delete
  6. Click on Delete


Step-by-Step: Deleting a Grade item Associated with a learning activity (dropbox, quiz, or discussion)

You have the option to either delete the learning activity the grade item is associated with, or disassociate it from the grade item.


Delete a Quiz/Dropbox

  1. Click on Submission Review
  2. Click on Dropboxes/Quizzes
  3. Check the box next to the Dropbox/Quiz you would like to delete
  4. Click on More Actions
  5. Click on Delete
  6. Click on Delete (completing these steps will delete the dropbox/quiz from your course)


Delete a Discussion Topic 

  1. Click on Submission Review
  2. Click on Discussions
  3. Click on More Actions
  4. Click on Delete
  5. Check the box next to the Discussion that you would like to delete
  6. Click on Delete
  7. Click on Cancel


Disassociating the Learning Activity from its Grade Item

Disassociating (unlinking) a grade item from a dropbox

  1. Click on Submission Review
  2. Click on Dropboxes
  3. Click on dropdown arrow dropdown example.png next to dropbox
  4. Click on Edit Folder
  5. Click on dropdown arrow  next to In Grade Book 
  6. Click on Not in Grade Book 

  7. Click on Save and Close at the bottom of the dropbox settings page


Disassociating (unlinking) a a grade item from a discussion/quiz

  1. Click on Submission Review
  2. Click on Quizzes/Discussions
  3. Click on dropdown arrowdropdown example.pngnext to item
  4. Click on Edit
  5. Click on Assessment
  6. Click on dropdown arrow under Grade item

  7. Click on None
  8. Click on Save and Close

Once you have disassociated the Learning Activity from its grade item, you can delete that grade item in the gradebook by following the steps at the top of this guide.
