This quick guide describes adding a bonus item to an extra credit category. With this scenario, there are a number of settings that must be set correctly. If the settings are correct, the bonus item will be calculated correctly for the final calculated grade item.
Check out the PDF attachment "Demystifying the Final Calculated Grade" for more information.
Bonus Item Information - Points Gradebook
Bonus items in a points gradebook are simply added on top of total possible points the students have received. So it is important that you be very sure how many extra credit points you want to the student earn overall. If you do not have the Can Exceed setting checked for the individual bonus items, category in which the items reside, and final calculated and adjusted grade, the final grade will add in the extra credit points.
Step-by-Step:
- Click on Grades on the Navbar
- Click on New
- Click on Item
- Click on Numeric
- Enter a Title/Name for the Bonus Grade Item
- Under Category, select the category you wish to place the grade item
- Under Maximum Points, enter total possible points for the bonus item
- Check the box Can Exceed
- Check the box Bonus
- Click on Save and Close (You will now see your Bonus/Extra Credit item in the category with a star next to the grade item)
- Check the boxes next to Category Title/Name, Current Overall Grade, and the Grade to Submit to MySPC
- Scroll to the top of the gradebook, click on Bulk Edit
- Under the Can Exceed column, check the box for all three grade items
- Click on Save
