Introduction
Your course navigation determines what students see and can access in your course. By curating your Navigation menu thoughtfully, you can help students quickly find key resources, complete assignments efficiently, and navigate course tools without confusion. You now have the ability to customize your course navigation, and this guide will show you how.
Step-by-Step: Editing your Course Navigation
-
Locate the course navigation settings: Navigate to your course in Canvas. Select Settings in the Course Navigation (1) and then select the Navigation tab (2).
-
Review the current Navigation setup.
-
Fixed Navigation Items: These items are fixed in the navigation and automatically set to display for students. They will be at the top. No changes can be made to these items and their setup.
-
Added to Navigation Menu: These items are currently added to your navigation menu as an instructor.
-
Removed from Navigation Menu: These items are currently not on your navigation menu as an instructor.

-
Curate your Navigation menu.
- Drag and drop all items you'd like to have visible in the Added to Navigation Menu.
- Drag and drop all items you don't want to have visible/don't need in the Removed from Navigation Menu (drag and drop).
-
Click Save Navigation Changes to apply your changes.
- Click the Home button in your course navigation to view your changes. Make any changes as needed.
-
Adjust what your students see in the course Navigation:
- Consider what you'd like students to access from the Modules, and what you'd like students to access directly from the Navigation buttons. In some cases, you might want them to be able to access something from both places. Ensure that, however you set up your navigation and modules, students are able to access everything they need in your course.
- To add an item to the students' Navigation, check the box next to Display for Students for that item. In the example screenshot below, the instructor decided to display Office 365, Brainfuse Online Tutoring, Parchment Badges, and Packback to students in their course Navigation. McGraw Hill SIMnet LTIA is not checked to display for students, since she wants them to access the program from the Modules.
Note: Some items are disabled from student view by default. - Select Save Navigation Changes.
