Welcome to the Student Outreach tool in Canvas! This custom tool was created to help you reach out to your students via text, phone, Canvas Inbox, and/or email. 

Please note that you will not be able to see student emails in the People menu in your Canvas course anymore, and will need to navigate to the Student Outreach tool instead.

How to Access the Student Outreach Tool

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select Student Outreach from the course navigation menu.

  2. The Student Outreach tool will open. At the top of the Student Outreach tool, you'll see the total number of teachers, enrolled students, added students, and withdrawn students in your course.

    Below, you'll see all students in your course, listed alphabetically by last name. Each student has his/her own row containing the following: 
    1. Profile photo
    2. Student's name and ID
    3. When the student was last active in your class
    4. Student's current grade
    5. Option to text student
    6. Option to call student
    7. Option to Start a Conversation via Canvas Inbox with the student
    8. Option to email the student's @live.spcollege.edu email address

How to text a student using the Student Outreach Tool

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select Student Outreach from the course navigation menu. 
  2. Scroll through the Student Outreach tool and locate the student you'd like to text. 
  3. Select the Text button to open the texting window. 
  4. In the texting window, confirm that you've selected the right student (1) by verifying the student's name. If you have texted the student before, prior messages will show up in the middle of the screen (2) though if you have not texted, it will be blank. Write your text message in the Text Message field (3). When you're finished typing, select the Send Text Message button to send. 

How to call a student using the Student Outreach Tool

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select Student Outreach from the course navigation menu. 
  2. Scroll through the Student Outreach tool and locate the student you'd like to call. 
  3. Select the Call button to open the texting window. call button
  4. Select the Open Microsoft Teams button to open Teams to make the phone call.

How to start a conversation in the Canvas Inbox using the Student Outreach Tool

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select Student Outreach from the course navigation menu. 
  2. Scroll through the Student Outreach tool and locate the student you'd like to send a Canvas Inbox message to. 
  3. Select the Start Conversation (Inbox) button to open the Canvas Inbox compose window.

  4. Compose your message to the student and select Send Message to send. 
    Note: This is an individual message from you to the student.

How to use the Student Outreach Tool to start an email exchange

  1. Navigate to your course in Canvas and select Student Outreach from the course navigation menu. 
  2. Scroll through the Student Outreach tool and locate the student to whom you'd like to send an email.  
  3. Select the Email button. This will open an email to the student you selected.
  4. Type and send the email to the student.
