Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) adds an extra layer of security to your account. Even if someone learns your password, MFA helps prevent unauthorized access by requiring an additional verification step.

Before You Begin

Important: Keep both your computer and mobile device nearby during setup. You will need to use both devices to complete enrollment.

Estimated Setup Time: 5-10 minutes

To complete setup, you will need:

• A computer or laptop connected to the internet
• A smartphone (iPhone or Android)
• Access to your school account credentials
• The MFA enrollment website: aka.ms/mfasetup

What to Expect After Setup

Once MFA is configured, Microsoft may ask you to verify your identity when:

• Signing in to your account
• Signing in from a new device
• Signing in from a new location
• Accessing school resources outside the campus network
• Performing sensitive account actions

You may receive a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app asking you to approve the sign-in request.

Step 1

Open a web browser and enter aka.ms/mfasetup in the address bar, then press Enter on your keyboard.

Step 2

After signing in, you will be taken to the Security info page. This page allows you to manage the methods used to verify your identity and reset your password.

Step 3

In the Security info section, select the Add sign-in method with the plus sign next to it.

Step 4

After selecting the Add sign-in method, a list of available sign-in methods will appear. From the menu, choose Microsoft Authenticator.

Step 5

Once Microsoft Authenticator is selected, a popup will appear asking you to install the Microsoft Authenticator app. This option is available on both the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

If Microsoft Authenticator is already installed on your phone, proceed to the next step.

While installing, ensure you select the Microsoft Authenticator application from the official Microsoft Corporation. Be cautious of similarly named applications. Provided is a screenshot from a mobile device.

Step 6

Open the Microsoft Authenticator app and select Add Account (or the + button). Then choose Work or school account.

Step 7

Select Scan QR Code. Using your device, point the camera at the QR code on the computer screen. Once the QR Code is successfully scanned, select Next on your computer.

If Your Camera Cannot Scan the QR Code:

• Ensure the QR code is fully visible on your computer screen
• Increase your screen brightness
• Clean your phone camera lens
• Try moving the phone closer or farther from the screen
• Contact the Technical Support Center (TSC) if the issue persists.

Step 8

A number will appear on your computer screen. Enter the same number into the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. Select Yes or Approve.

Step 9

Congratulations,

You have successfully configured Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

When signing into your school account, you may receive a notification from Microsoft Authenticator asking you to approve the sign-in request. Review the details for the request and approve only if you initiated the sign-in.

Important Security Reminder

Only approve sign-in requests that you initiated.

If you receive an unexpected MFA notification:

• Do not approve of it.
• Select No or Deny if available.
• Contact the SPC Technical Support Center (TSC) immediately.
