Sharing important announcements with your teaching team or across your different courses doesn't have to mean copying and pasting. Canvas provides built-in tools to do this quickly and effectively directly from your Announcements page.
This guide will show you how to share an announcement with other faculty and how to copy it to another one of your courses.

Part 1: How to Share an Announcement with Other Faculty
Perhaps you’ve drafted a perfect announcement about an upcoming guest speaker or a change in office hours that your co-teacher or TA also needs to post. Instead of sending them the text, you can send them the entire announcement, complete with formatting and links, for them to easily import.
The Method: Use "Send to" from the Announcements Page
This feature creates a direct link to the announcement content that you can share with any other instructor at your institution.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Locate the Announcement:
- Navigate to Announcements in your course.
- Click the Announcement
Note: This works for both published announcements and saved drafts.
-
Send the Announcement:
- In the Announcement, click the three vertical dots (Options menu) to the right of the announcement title.
- From the dropdown menu, select Send to.
-
Enter Recipient's Name:
- A dialog box will appear.
- In the Search field, type the name of the faculty member you want to share with. As you type, Canvas will search your institution's user list.
- Click on the correct person's name when it appears.
-
Add a Message (Optional) and Send:
- You can add a quick note in the Message field (e.g., "Can you post this to your 101 section?").
- Click Send.
What Happens Next?
The faculty member you sent it to will receive a notification in their Canvas inbox. They can then go to their own course's Announcements page, click the + Announcement button, and will see an Import Content option in the top-right corner of the editor. This will allow them to pull your announcement in as a draft, which they can then edit and publish themselves.
Part 2: How to Copy an Announcement to Another One of Your Courses
If you teach multiple sections of the same course, posting the same announcement repeatedly is inefficient. You can directly copy an announcement from one of your courses to another in just a few clicks.
The Method: Use "Copy to..." from the Announcements Page
This powerful feature lets you copy content seamlessly between any courses you teach.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Locate the Announcement:
- Navigate to Announcements in your course.
- Click the Announcement
Note: This works for both published announcements and saved drafts.
-
Initiate the Copy:
- In the Announcement, click the three vertical dots (Options menu) to the right of the announcement title.
- From the dropdown menu, select Copy to....
-
Select the Destination Course:
- A dialog box will appear.
- Start typing the name of the destination course (the one you want to copy to) in the Search for a course... field.
- Click on the correct course when it appears in the list.
Note: For best results use the Course Code although the course name will also work in most cases. Secondly make sure to select the correct Semester (example Fall 2025: 0655)
-
Start the Copy:
- Click the Copy button.
- Click the Copy button.
-
Confirm and Locate in New Course:
- Canvas will confirm with a message that the content was copied successfully.
Note: This can take several minutes to process the copy. - Navigate to the Announcements page in the destination course.
- The announcement will appear there as an unpublished draft, allowing you to review it and make any section-specific changes before clicking Save to publish it.
- Canvas will confirm with a message that the content was copied successfully.
Important Notes
- Drafts are Best: Copying an unpublished draft announcement is often cleaner than copying a published one, as it avoids bringing over old comments or delayed post dates.
- Permissions: Your ability to see the "Send to" and "Copy to" options depends on your instructor-level role in the course.
- Sections: If you want an announcement to appear in multiple sections within the same course, use the "Post to" dropdown when creating the announcement instead of using "Copy to."
Using these methods directly from the Announcements page will save you time and ensure consistency across all your communications.
