Tech Tip Tuesday: Roll Call Attendance
Setup Roll Call Attendance
- In Course Navigation, navigate to Third Party Tools in the course navigation (1) and select Attendance (2).
- This will automatically create a Canvas Assignment (1) called Attendance (2). To avoid Attendance calculation errors, you should not delete, rename, or unpublish the Attendance assignment. If the Attendance assignment is deleted, the Roll Call tool will not be able to take attendance.
Edit Roll Call Settings

- To edit Roll Call settings, click the Settings icon (1) and then select Roll Call Settings.
NOTE: This settings button will not show up until you take attendance for at least one student and then refresh your page.
Exclude from Final Grade
By default, Roll Call Attendance counts as part of the final grade. You can exclude the Roll Call assignment from the final grade if you'd like to do so. In order to exclude it from the final grade calculation, navigate to the Roll Call Settings and check the box next to Do not count attendance toward final grade (1). You can also adjust the slider for what percentage is deducted for lateness in this screen (2).
Take Attendance with Roll Call Attendance
In the List View, you can take attendance by toggling the correct mark next to each student's name [1]. Click the attendance mark until you arrive at the desired mark:
- To mark the student as present and on time, click one time to make a green checkmark appear (1).
- To mark the student as not present, click two times to make a red X appear (2).
- To mark the student as late, click three times to make a yellow clock appear (3).
- To unmark the attendance status, leave the button as the default (gray no symbol icon, 4). The unmarked attendance status also indicates an excused absence.
You can also take attendance by clicking the Mark All Present button (5).
If you need to start over or clear all attendance entries, click the Unmark All button (6).
Change the Point Value for Roll Call Attendance Assignment
By default, the Roll Call Attendance assignment is worth 100 points. To change the point value, you need to edit the assignment in Canvas.
Select Assignments in your course navigation.
Locate the Roll Call Attendance assignment, and click the edit icon ((three dots) on the right.
Select Edit from the menu that appears to enter the assignment editing settings.
In the Edit Assignment screen, type in the amount of points you'd like Roll Call Attendance for the entire term to be worth (1), and then select Save (2). This will update the assignment's point value in the gradebook.
Can my students see Roll Call Attendance?
Yes, they can. By default, they can access it from Grades on their course navigation (1). They'll see a row called Roll Call Attendance with all of their other assignments (2) and if they click on it (3), they'll see one Roll Call Attendance assignment with their total attendance score (4). Note: They may need to wait a few seconds for it to load.
Note: If you add Roll Call Attendance to a module, then students can also access it from there. Note: Students cannot access the Assignments button on the Course Navigation in our instance of Canvas, which is why they can only see the Roll Call Attendance assignment in the Grades or Modules (if you place it there).
