By default, Canvas notifies you via your Outlook 365 email account when a Canvas Inbox conversation is received. If you respond from your Outlook email, the response goes directly to the student's Canvas Inbox. However, some instructors like to keep Canvas Inbox messages and Outlook emails completely separate. In order to do this, you need to tell Canvas not to notify you (via email) that a new Inbox message was received in Canvas.
How to Turn off Canvas Inbox to Microsoft Outlook email notifications
- Navigate to SPC's instance of Canvas.
- From the global navigation menu, select Account (1), then select Notifications (2).
- By default, the Settings for (1) dropdown menu (2) is set to Account. This means that when you update notifications here, they will update for your entire Canvas account.
If you'd like to update notifications for just one class, in the Settings for area (1), select the down arrow next to Account (2) and select the class (3) you'd like to update notifications for from the dropdown menu. - In the Notifications settings menu, scroll down to Conversations (1). Note: Canvas uses Conversations to refer to Inbox messages. To the left of the notification type, there is a bell icon (2). The bell icon will show green if notifications are on, and it will be white with a line through it if notifications are off.
- To update notifications, select a bell icon (1) and select your notification preference from the dropdown menu (2). If you'd like to turn notifications off completely, select Notifications off (3).
Note: If you opt to not receive email notifications when Canvas Inbox messages are received/replied to/etc., please make sure to check your Canvas Inbox frequently to ensure you don't miss any.
