Lightboard Teaching Tool Guide

A lightboard is an innovative teaching tool that consists of a transparent glass panel illuminated with LED lights. Instructors write on this glass surface using fluorescent markers while facing the camera, allowing them to maintain eye contact with students.

Setting Up and Using a Lightboard

Equipment and Environment

Lightboard Components

A transparent glass panel with LED illumination and these key components:

Location of power button on lightboard side panel

Power Button: Located on the right side panel. Press to activate LED illumination.

Close-up of LED dimmer dial controls

Dimmer Dials: Adjust marker glow intensity. Turn clockwise to increase brightness.

Fluorescent Markers

Special markers designed for optimal visibility on illuminated glass:

Instructor shaking fluorescent marker vertically

Shake Before Use: Vigorously shake markers for 5-10 seconds to activate fluorescent properties.

Storage: Keep caps on tightly and store horizontally.

Proper circular motion for cleaning lightboard surface

Cleaning Technique: Use microfiber cloth in circular motions. Avoid paper towels.

Solution: Only use approved glass cleaner sprayed onto cloth, not directly on surface.

Camera & Lighting

Camera positioned directly opposite instructor at eye level

Positioning: Camera should be at instructor's eye level, 6-8 feet from lightboard.

Focus: Auto-focus disabled. Manually focus on writing plane.

Room lighting control panel showing lights off position

Lighting: Turn off overhead lights. Use only lightboard illumination.

Ambient Light: Blackout curtains recommended for daytime use.

Writing & Presentation Techniques

Writing Tips

  • Write larger than normal (minimum 2" tall letters)
  • Use consistent color coding (blue=main points, green=examples)
  • Pause writing to maintain eye contact with camera
  • Angle your body 30° to avoid blocking text

Presentation Skills

  • Practice writing while speaking (it's harder than it looks!)
  • Use the "divide and conquer" board space method
  • Record 3-5 minute segments rather than long sessions
  • Wear a lavalier mic clipped to your collar

Impact on Learning

Research indicates that lightboards positively influence student learning and engagement across multiple dimensions:

Enhanced Understanding

A 2022 study showed a 68.2% improvement in average scores on in-class assignments when lightboard videos supplemented traditional lectures.

Key Finding: Students reported 42% better retention of complex processes when seeing them drawn in real-time.

Increased Engagement

Student surveys show lightboard presentations are perceived as 73% more engaging than slide-based videos, with particular benefits for:

  • Visual learners (89% preference)
  • Kinesthetic learners (76% preference)
  • Students with ADHD (68% reported better focus)

Positive Perceptions

Comparative analysis revealed stronger student endorsement across three key metrics:

92%
Understanding
88%
Engagement
94%
Satisfaction
Research Note: While these findings are promising across STEM disciplines, more study is needed in humanities applications. Results based on 2022-2023 institutional research (1,427 students across 48 courses).

Best Practice Recommendations

Content Design

  • Limit to 1-2 key concepts per 5-minute segment
  • Pre-sketch complex diagrams before recording
  • Use color consistently (e.g., red for equations)

Technical Setup

  • Do NOT touch Camera
  • Test marker visibility at different intensity levels

Pedagogical Integration

  • Pair with guided notes for active learning
  • Use for "muddiest point" explanations
  • Create paused problem-solving sequences

Recommended Attire for Lightboard Use

What you wear significantly affects lightboard video quality. Follow these guidelines for optimal results:

Avoid Busy Patterns

Example showing how striped clothing creates distracting moiré patterns
  • Stripes, checks, and small patterns create moiré effects
  • Logos/text appear reversed on camera
  • Solid colors work best (navy, black, burgundy)

Color Considerations

  • Light colors blend into background
  • Dark colors provide best contrast
  • Avoid neon colors that compete with markers

Fabric & Fit

  • Sheer fabrics become translucent under lights
  • Structured fabrics maintain professional appearance
  • Avoid loose sleeves that brush the board

Summary

The lightboard is a powerful tool for creating dynamic, interactive learning experiences that combine the benefits of:

  • Face-to-face instruction (eye contact, gestures)
  • Visual demonstration (real-time writing/drawing)
  • Digital flexibility (recorded, pausable content)

When properly integrated into curriculum design and paired with active learning strategies, lightboard videos can significantly enhance student engagement and comprehension across disciplines.
