Add course media files to Canvas quiz questions

This guide will demonstrate how to add course audio or video files to your Canvas quiz questions. This is helpful for many reasons, but this guide uses the example of adding an audio recording of the quiz question text to the question itself so so students can click to have it read aloud to them.

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course and locate the quiz in which you want to add an audio file. Select build to open Quiz Builder, and allow you to edit the quiz questions.

  2. Navigate to the question you want to edit and press the pencil icon to open the Rich Content Editor. This will allow you to make changes to the content. See: What is the Rich Content Editor

  3. You may need to select the vertical three dots to expand and see the full Rich Content Editor menu.

This is what the full, expanded Rich Content Editor menu looks like:
  4. Click in the text to begin editing. You may need to click and drag the 8 dot icon to make the text box bigger, so you can see more than 1 line of editable text at a time.
Note: Many of us are accustomed to typing the link text, highlighting, and then linking content to the highlighted text. Do not do this! It will not work. Find a blank area of the text box where you want the media file to be, and press enter to give it its own line.
  5. Select the upload document icon in the Rich Content Editor toolbar. This will open the upload options. Select Course Documents. Course documents means documents that are already in your Canvas course, but not placed in this exact spot yet.

  6. The Add window will appear. Select the down arrow next to Documents and select All.
  7. Select Course Files from the available folders.
  8. Locate and select the media file you want to add from the folders. They are arranged by modules. In this example, it's an audio recording of the Module 3, Check Your Knowledge quiz, question 6.

Note: You could search by filename to locate the media file you want instead of looking in the folders. However, that approach requires you to know the filename or be willing to scroll through all of them for the course. In this example, the file was an audio recording for a quiz called Check Your Knowledge Module 3. "Check Your Knowledge" did not call up the right file. I scrolled through all the options and saw "CYK" which worked.

  9. This will add an embedded audio or image file to the text of the question via the Rich Content Editor.

Note: Make sure to delete any broken link text from the question inside the Rich Content Editor.
