Where should I set the dates for my course: In the Content Area or the Submission Review Area? The answer is not an easy one because it depends on a number of factors and personal preferences. Please review the information below on each area option and the things to consider.
Setting Dates in the Course Content area:
- You can set all three dates: Start, Due, or End Dates on all content in this area
- Calendar: The dates set are automatically added to the calendar whether you want to be added or not. You have no choice. Remember that if you add just a start date, that date will appear on the calendar. If you add both a start and end date, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you add only a due date, that date will appear on the calendar. If you set both a due and end date, both will appear on the calendar.
- How to Set Dates in Course Content: In order to set dates, you have to navigate through each of the modules to find the quizzes, Dropboxes, and discussion topics. Then click on Bulk Edit or click on the context menu next to each item and choose Edit Proprieties In-place to add the dates. This could time consuming.
- Discussions: Setting the dates on the discussion topics will set the topic's visibility, which means if you set an end date, the students will not be able their post or other student posts after the end date passes unless you also change the availability settings. Please review the tutorial on Setting Dates on Discussion Topics to learn more about this subject.
Setting Dates in the Submission Review area:
- You can set only start and end dates on quizzes and discussion topics but not due dates. Dropboxes are the only tool that allows you set all three date types.
- Calendar: The dates are not automatically added to the calendar. However, there is a checkbox that allows you send the dates to the calendar. Remember that if you set both start and end dates, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you set only a start date, that date will appear on the calendar.
-
View: You have to access to all the quizzes, Dropboxes, and discussion topics in one area without having view them inside of their modules. This makes it easier to manage setting the dates on multiple items.
- Discussions: Setting the dates on the discussion topics is a special case because you have availability options that change what the student experiences. Please review the tutorial on Setting Dates on Discussion Topics to learn more about this subject.
Using the Manage Dates Tool under Edit Course
- The manage dates tool is an area in the course administration options under Edit Course on the navbar. This is an administrative tool and the most advanced way to manage all course dates in one place. It appears as a grid of all the items in your course and you can bulk edit dates by item type.
-
Calendar: The dates are not automatically added to the calendar. However, there is a checkbox that allows you send the dates to the calendar. Remember that if you set both start and end dates, only the end date will appear on the calendar. If you set only a start date, that date will appear on the calendar.
- This area may be the easiest in terms of dealing with dates in your course because you can add or delete dates on any piece of content. There are also very powerful filter and search features that make it easy to find the items you need to update. Please review the tutorial on the Manage Dates tool
